Judge Squatrito was recently honored as his portrait was unveiled at the Federal Courthouse in Hartford. Judge Squatrito was appointed to the bench in 1994 and has recently attained Senior Status in our District. Judge Squatrito was recognized by his peers and former law clerks for his work ethic, legal abilities, as well as the important impact he has had on their careers and lives.
Rand-Whitney Containerboard, Corp. and the Town of Montville have been involved in a long-term struggle related to the quality of water supplied by the Town to Rand-Whitney, and the impact that has on the company's paper-making process. Judge Fitzsimmons, who is overseeing this dispute, recently issued an Order directing the Town to post a bond in the amount of $16 million in the event the Town pursues an appeal of the underlying District Court judgment. Interest is currently accruing on the underlying judgment against the Town at a rate of $50,000 per month. The Hartford Courant reports today that the White House has resubmitted Judge Vanessa L. Bryant's name among the 33 judicial nominees that issued from the White House this week. Judge Bryant currently serves on the State Court Bench. For a fuller account of this issue, please see this article that was posted on the Courant's website this morning.
With the shift in power in Congress, the White House's January 9th list of 33 proposed federal judges did not contain four candidates who were considered to be controversial nominations by some. Those four individuals include the Honorable Terrence W. Boyle, William J. Haynes II, William G. Myers III, and Michael Wallace. Chief Justice John Roberts recently issued his year end report which focused primarily on the issue of judicial salaries. In his report, Chief Justice Roberts warned that the issue of judicial pay had "now reached the level of a constitutional crisis" as reported by CNN.com. According to the New York Times, one of the agenda items for the new Congress is to address and perhaps revise the Federal Sentencing Guidelines to give District Court Judges more discretion when fashioning sentences. (The New York Times article can viewed by clicking here.)
